Strasbourg - Marché de Noël

Lights. Vin Chaud. Bretzels.

We ventured about an hour North up to France yesterday to visit the large Christmas market in the quaint town of Strasbourg.  We were blown away by the amount of tourists (wall to wall people) and the number of shopping stalls congregated throughout the city.  Each of the stalls were cute little chalets selling food, gifts and/or vin chaud (hot, mulled wine).

One of the main markets is centered around the old Notre Dame cathedral, built between 1284-1439 and situated by one of the many canals that criss-cross the city.

While the markets were fun during the day, they really came to life once the sun went down, with millions of lights outlining the huts and illuminating the city's cobblestone streets.  We were not  alone in this observation, as the later it got the more crowded it became.

A huge Christmas tree was set-up in the city center, adjacent to a stage where carolers sang festive Christmas songs (in French) at night.  It really gets you into the holiday spirit!
