Strasbourg Christmas Market (Round 2)

Marché de Noël.

We returned from Marrakech on Saturday night, making Sunday the perfect time to visit Strasbourg's Christmas Market.  Last year we visited and loved it, so we looked forward to our return visit.  It did not disappoint.  The magic really happens when it gets dark and everything lights up but we arrived late afternoon so we could get the best of both worlds.  The place was already jam-packed, we could barely walk!

Our first stop was to grab one of the flat pizza-breads we saw everyone eating.  Warm and cheesy and hammy and delicious.  Afterwards we grabbed vin chaud to wash it down.  I thought "vin chaud" was just how you say "mulled wine" in French, but they were also selling "gluhwein" (German), so I was very confused?!  Then we wanted something sweet, so a big gaufre (waffle) doused in chocolate hit the spot.  Healthy start so far, right?

To continue eating our way through the market, we hit a cute winstub to escape the cold for a bit and warm up with some local onion soup.  We were in foodie heaven.

Now it was time to enjoy the lights and buy all the stuff we had picked out earlier in the day - advent calendar, Christmas beer, an old map and some tasty mousse boules (shaped like bells and filled with different flavors).

mousse boules !!

We also enjoyed an elaborate light display on one of the buildings in the main square.  Pretty high-tech and very cool.  It was a very successful and festive day!
