Zermatt

Swiss Alps. Matterhorn.
Population 5,785

We  had a great trip to Zermatt in mid-May.  Even the train ride down was scenic.  It was a mix of weather, but mostly good/sunny.  Upon arrival we headed straight to the gondola(s) up to Klein-Matterhorn.....pricey excursion, but definitely worth it.  After 3 gondola rides up the mountain, we were at the top, surrounded by a sea of snow-capped mountains and glaciers.  And the Matterhorn is mesmerizing, you can help but stare, and stare some more.  There were people summer-skiing, although it was a bunny slope and didn't look too exciting.  The more adventurous had skis strapped on their backs and were going above and beyond the ski boundaries.  On one run, you need to have your passport because you end up in Italy.  Would hate for it to be the last run of the day and accidentally take the wrong turn......!!  The town itself is really cute, with the traditional chalet-style buildings and intricate wood-work.  It was a holiday weekend and quite touristy, but I guess that's to be expected.  The place we stayed was great -- they had a free cocktail hour the first night we arrived (score) and also a free minibar, so we left with 4 Heinekins in hand (score again)!

The hikes and trails around the village are very well marked and in great condition.  We went on an 8-mile loop the second day, which was straight uphill for the most part and a good workout.  I think Matt said we gained 3,000 feet of elevation and made it up to 8,500 feet or so.  We were walking up ski lifts in the snow part of the time, but the views along the way were stellar.  As for wildlife (in addition to Matt, ha ha), we encountered a little red fox, marmot and mountain sheep wearing huge bells -- they looked so cute and cuddly!
