Basler Herbstmesse & Terracotta Warriors!

Reisenrad.  Käse Hörnli.  Terracotta Warriors.

A rare event, but we stayed in Basel this past weekend!  The Fall Fair (Herbstmesse) started last month and ends this week so we figured we better go check out the cute wooden stalls and get our fill of käse hörnli (tasty Swiss version of mac n' cheese), potato fritters with apple sauce (kartoffelpuffer) and crepes before it was too late.  The huge ferris wheel (das Reisenrad) set up in the Münsterplatz church square is quite a pretty sight.  It even has a big "B" for Basel, etched in the middle!  There are several other amusement park rides and tons of stalls in several plazas throughout the city selling local sweets, food, drinks, art, clothing etc. I'm sure a lot of people started their Christmas shopping here!  This year we did not have any glühwein as it felt too warm -- it was a very balmy Saturday.  And this year marked the 543rd year of the fair!  Yes, it has quite a long tradition in Basel.

On Sunday we took the train to Bern to see the Qin Terracotta Warriors exhibition.  Lord have mercy, the museum was packed!  We were so shocked.  We opted for the audio guide, which was worth the extra 5 Swissies, so we could learn about the history of China and the unearthing of the statues by farmers in 1974.  It was very well laid out and comprehensive (just a tad crowded!)  The museum also hosts a permanent Albert Einstein exhibition, was was pretty fascinating (in addition to the history of Bern).  The museum itself is quite beautiful and has a lot of great, diverse stuff to see.
